Save the World? Let's Eat Insects!

Insects can be a source of protein for more efficient and environmentally friendly.

VIVAnews - There is no doubt that insects contain high protein. No wonder that since long has been a lot of thought to make use of insects as 'snacks' are healthy.
Recently, researchers from Wageningen University in The Netherlands, reiterated that the latest results of their studies.

It makes insects as food may still repugnant to most people. However, in some places, such as in southern Africa, Mopani worms, are quite popular snack.
The Japanese also have long larvae consume aquatic insects, while the Mexicans also have often made the grasshoppers as food. Unfortunately this tradition is quite popular in modern culture.
In fact, according to research team Wageningen University, the insect trace greenhouse gases contribute more because they produce less methane, nitrous oxide, and ammonia, rather than beef or pork.

"This proves that the hypothesis that insects could become more efficient source of protein, and I am very sure there will be bugs that can be eaten, in the future," said Dennis Oonincx, from Wageningen University.

In fact, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), blamed the food sector as a contributor to greenhouse gas emissions are large enough, which is about 9 percent of carbon dioxide emissions. One of the largest, is the use of land (37 percent from 65 percent methane and nitrous oxide emissions).

Therefore, they concluded that the consumption of insects could be the perfect solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which can reduce up to 30 percent in food production, thanks to the reduction of meat consumption. Not only that, it also means there will be a reduction of sudden death from heart disease.
